Profile Die Case Study

One of the most challenging tasks in Extrusion is balancing the flow in a Profile Extrusion Die.   This is why Compuplast has devoted a great deal of time and effort into developing tools that help die designers do the job much more efficiently.  Here is an example where someone attempted to design a die without any analysis and how the FLOW 2000 Profile Die module was used solve the problem.

The customer approached us with the following problem.

They wanted a part to look like this ....

But what they got on their first try was a part that looked like this...

FLOW 2000, Profile Die Module Analysis

The analysis performed on the original die channel shape clearly shows the high flow areas that resulted in the observed profile corrugation

Original Die Channel Shape
It was proposed that the flow be balanced with the addition of restrictors in the high flow areas as shown in the image below.

Modified Die Channel Shape

The fact that the die required some resistance in the high flow area is fairly obvious but the difficult question is exactly how much.  The FLOW 2000, Profile Die module helped determine the exact shape and size  required to balance the flow properly and solve the problem quickly and efficiently.

A great deal of time, money and effort could have been saved if this simple analysis was performed prior to the initial trials.   Contact us before you cut your next die to see how Compuplast products and services can help increase your chances of success.
